The Optical Society of Southern California was founded in 1951 to increase and disseminate the knowledge of optics and closely allied sciences and to promote the mutual interests of investigators, organizations, teachers and students in these fields. The Society is a local section of the The Optical Society (OSA) and typically meets on the second Wednesday of each month from October through June.  Most of our meetings are open to the public.  Those interested in promoting our goals are encouraged to apply for either Individual or Corporate Membership.

Advancements in Wavefront Shaping
for Biophotonics

Abstract:  Wavefront shaping has been an active research area over the past decade.  Its ability to control light transmission through or into a scattering medium has significant biophotonics, computation, imaging, encryption and other applications.  In this talk, I will discuss the various advancements we have made in wavefront shaping and talk about the use of wavefront shaping in biophotonics.  I will also discuss two recent and surprising findings in our wavefront shaping work. The first is the intentional combination of wavefront shaping and a controlled scattering medium to create novel optical system – in effect, turning scattering from a ‘foe’ to a ‘friend’ for wavefront shaping.  The second is the complete dropping of phase characterization in a new class of ‘wavefront shaping’ methods. scale up our devices from a handful of qubits to hundreds.

"Advancing Microresonator-Based Photonics Technology at OEWaves"

Abstract:  Crystalline whispering gallery mode resonators (WGMRs) are characterized with kHz optical bandwidths achievable at room temperature.  Such a narrow bandwidth enables their applications for generation of high spectral purity signals in both optical and radio frequency spectral domains.  For instance, WGMR-based self-injection-locked semiconductor lasers can be created in visible and IR and have characteristics better than any other laser of similar size.  As the result, miniature gyroscopes and clocks become feasible. WGMR-based X-Ka band microwave photonic oscillators are characterized with spectral purity unachievable in both optical and electronic devices of similar form factor.  Kerr frequency combs generated in WGMRs pumped with continuous wave light result in generation of femtosecond optical pulses on a chip.  The frequency comb integrated with a miniature agile laser can be utilized for optical frequency synthesis.  These and other applications will be discussed and analyzed in the presentation.

"Tunable Laser Based Spectroscopic Imaging and Sensing"

Abstract:  Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) have opened up an enormous number of possible applications in the Mid and Long Wave Infrared (loosely defined as from 3-12um of center wavelength).  Basic research, chemical sensing, directed infrared counter measures,  and free space communications are just a few of the many examples.  In this talk we will cover applications in the Spectroscopic Imaging and Sensing arena using tunable embodiments of a QCL.  After a brief introduction to the QCL and its technical benefits, we will then dive into Instrument and Applications Engineering examples ranging from tunable laser based microscopes, tissue diagnostics for cancer screening, pharmaceutical drug development and blood diagnostics all using tunable Mid-Long Wave IR sources.

"Optics for DNA sequencing"

Abstract:  The talk will cover the basics of DNA and sequencing for physicists and engineers with as little chemistry or biology as possible.  Starting from the history of the human genome sequencing project ($3B in 2003), we move through the advances in sequencing technology to today’s products where the sequencing cost has dropped to <$1k.  Each sequencer is made of watt class lasers, illumination engines and epi-microscopes.  We’ll look at the microscope technology and designs using custom objectives and sensors that are pushing resolution limits.
