The Optical Society of Southern California won the 2010 Local Section Excellence Award from the Optical Society. The award was announced at the October 25 plenary session at the OSA Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics 2010, held in Rochester, New York. OSSC's regular meetings and events as well as education and outreach activities were considered in determining the award winner. According to the OSA website, "OSA annually recognizes an outstanding section in the areas of advocacy, youth education and professional development programming. Winners receive an Excellence Award certificate and $1,000 USD." The Optical Society of Southern California is one of the most active OSA local sections in the world. Approximately two dozen officers contribute to managing the local section's business, events and outreach activities.
