Matthew Samson is a Senior Sensor Optics Engineer in the Autonomous Driving team at NIO, an EV startup that designs and manufactures vehicles for the Chinese market. While studying Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona, he developed an interest in optics via his Physics minor. On the advice of his professor, Dr. Alex Small, he became acquainted with the Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC), which further increased his exposure to the field. Upon graduating, he immediately began work as an Opto-Mechanical Engineer at N2 Imaging Systems in Irvine, CA (now UTC Aerospace Systems), where he gained extensive experience characterizing visible and LWIR night-vision devices. After four years at N2, he spent a year at Quartus Engineering Incorporated, a small consulting firm in San Diego, CA. Incidentally, this position frequently brought him to the Bay Area, which was his first foray into the tech field.
Matt originates from Orange County, CA where he has been serving on the Board of Directors of the OSSC since 2012 as Councilor, Arrangements Chair, Programs Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. In his leisure time, he enjoys playing guitar and ocean fishing. Following his move to the Bay Area, he married Dr. Karen Wong, an optometrist who works in private practice.
