Abstract: Polymer optics are no longer a low-cost substitute for glass. When designed and manufactured correctly, they enable aspheres, freeforms, diffractives, integrated mechanical features, and lightweight assemblies that would be impractical—or impossible—in conventional glass. Diverse Optics has spent nearly four decades developing that capability in Southern California, serving medical, defense, aerospace, and commercial customers from a 32,500-square-foot facility in Rancho Cucamonga.
This talk walks through the real manufacturing chain used to take a polymer optic from concept to repeatable production. We begin with material selection and optomechanical design, then show why single-point diamond turning sits at the center of the process: it produces functional prototypes, generates the mold inserts that will later run in production, and sets the form and surface-finish targets the molded part must meet. From there we cover precision injection molding—process windows, decoupling of fill and pack, environmental control, and robotic handling—followed by thin-film coating, bonding/assembly, and the metrology used to close the loop on form error, surface
roughness, and optical performance.
About our speaker: Gregory Miller is a member of the executive staff at Diverse Optics Inc. in Rancho Cucamonga, California overseeing engineering and operations. Diverse Optics designs and manufactures high-precision polymer optics—from diamond-turned prototypes and mold inserts through high-volume injection molding, coating, assembly, and metrology—for medical, defense, aerospace, and commercial customers.
Greg has spent more than 25 years in precision manufacturing and optomechanics. Before joining Diverse Optics in 2017, he held operations and engineering leadership roles at II-VI Aerospace & Defense, including Director of Operations and Director of Engineering, and earlier served as an optomechanical engineer at Advanced Medical Optics. His work has ranged from sapphire and optical-component production to process development and manufacturing scale-up.
He holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and an M.B.A. in Marketing and International Business.
