About this event

Quantum waves and their applications in quantum technologies

Prof. Ebrahim Karimi - The Institute for Quantum Studies, Chapman University

Prof. Ebrahim Karimi’s presentation will describe his work on quantum waves focuses on structured light and structured quantum waves—especially photons’ spatial modes, phase, and orbital angular momentum. Those ideas are used in quantum communication, quantum cryptography, quantum simulation, imaging, and quantum microscopy. His group has also shown real-world quantum key distribution links and developed quantum simulators for ring-shaped systems.

Prof. Ebrahim Karimi is an Iranian-Canadian physicist working in quantum optics, structured light, and quantum communication. He is a Professor at Chapman University and also holds the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Structured Waves and Quantum Communication at the University of Ottawa. His work centers on the quantum properties of photons and electrons, with applications in high-dimensional quantum systems, secure communication, and photonic technologies.

He has authored more than 200 publications and holds three patents. Karimi was also a founder and co-director of the University of Ottawa Quantum Institute (NexQT). His research has helped advance structured quantum waves, optical angular momentum, and real-time imaging of entangled photons.

He earned his BSc in Physics from Kerman University, his MSc in optics from IASBS, and his PhD from the University of Naples Federico II. He has received several honors, including the Ontario Early Researcher Award, the Herzberg Medal, the NSERC Arthur B. McDonald Fellowship, and the Rutherford Memorial Medal.
