A Technical Overview of the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT)
Andrew Rakich
Senior Optical Engineer, GMT

Abstract:

This presentation will first introduce the Giant Magellan Telescope and provide an update as to the current status of the project. Following this will be detailed discussion of the major optical components of the telescope, including the Primary Mirror subsystem, the two Secondary Mirror subsystems (seeing limited and adaptive), the M3 fold mirror and the Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector (a 1.5 m diameter refracting corrector). System error budgets have been developed for various diffraction limited and seeing limited use cases and the remainder of the talk will be devoted to discussing various aspects of how these budgets drive requirements on optical surface quality, alignment and stability, and on how these requirements are to be met.
