Join the Optical Society of Southern California and the Conejo-Ventura OSA for their May joint meeting on:
"Adventures in Optics"
by
Dr. Stephen D. Fantone, President & CEO of Optikos Corporation
May 14, 2014
The need for optical problem-solving spans a wide range of technical disciplines, applications and industries. Many of those who succeed at it have developed broad skills, benefited from collaborations, learned to persevere after multiple “failures,” and were open to serendipity (a brilliant innovation can be traced back as easily to a stroke of luck, as a stroke of genius). We’ll explore successes and failures in optics, chance encounters that led to unexpected opportunities, the problem of making things look too easy, ethical dilemmas, and dealing with organizational dysfunction. This is a largely non-technical talk about thriving in a technical environment.
About our speaker: Stephen D. Fantone is the founder and president of Optikos Corporation, headquartered in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Dr. Fantone attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received bachelor’s degrees in both electrical engineering and management. In 1979 he was awarded a Ph.D. degree in optics from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. He began his career with Polaroid Corporation and later went on to found Optikos.
Dr. Fantone is a Senior Lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department at MIT, serves on the boards of Zygo Corporation, Rofin-Sinar Technologies, Inc., the Pioneer Institute for Public Policy Research, the Hertz Foundation and The Optical Society Foundation. From 1996 to 2013, he served as the Treasurer of The Optical Society and was awarded their Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Fantone is a recognized expert in optical engineering and optical product development, has served on numerous program review panels, has provided expert testimony on patent infringement and trade secret litigation cases, and has been awarded over 65 patents covering a broad range of optical technologies.
