Instruments on Curiosity

Muthu Jeganathan, PhD
This presentation will provide an overview of the optical/NIR cameras and spectrometers on Curiosity (Mars Science Laboratory). The focus will be on three highly capable instruments –ChemCam which performs laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy; CheMin which performs X-Ray Diffraction/X-Ray Fluorescence; and Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM)Instrument Suite that consists of the Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer, Gas Chromatograph and Tunable Laser Spectrometer. These instruments allow scientists to assess Mars’ biological potential and characterize the geology of the landing region.
About our speaker: Dr. Jeganathan joined JPL in 1995 after receiving his B.S. from USC and M.S.& PhD. from Stanford, all in Electrical Engineering. In 2000, he left JPL to join Optical Crossing, Inc. where he was a founder and VP of Optical Wireless Products. Dr. Jeganathan returned to JPL in 2003 and became the Project Element Manager of several tasks overseeing the design, construction and testing of complex opto-mechanical instruments. His most recent work was on FINESSE, an exoplanet characterization mission. Dr. Jeganathan is currently supervisor of the Optical and Opto-mechanical Design and Engineering Group in the Instruments and Data Systems Division at JPL.
