Dear Industry Professional,
I am contacting you on behalf of Irvine Valley College (IVC) and the Advanced Technology and Education Park (ATEP). You have been identified by your colleagues in the optics and photonics community as industry experts. I am inviting you to attend our industry advisory meeting for Photonics Technician education and training programs at IVC/ATEP. Dan Hull and John Souders will be participating on behalf of OP-TEC, an NSF Center of Excellence in photonics education.
Arnie Bazensky of Schott North America will be the chair in the discussion portion of our meeting and will also be representing the interest of the Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC) along with
Donn Silberman. We realize your time is valuable but your knowledge and perspective is critical to the success of our new photonics education programs.
The IVC/ATEP mission is to establish “for-credit” classes, certificates and eventually a degree for Photonics Technicians. Precision optics is also desired but should be targeted after the photonics classes gain traction. For now the plan is…
· Create two for-credit classes that will be infused into the IVC electronics program as electives. This process is started and we are targeting March for completion.
· Expand what we have to a standalone certificate and degree program for Photonics Technicians.
· The expansion will be done with the intention of IVC/ATEP becoming a regional center with distant learning considerations to bring students from outside the OC region.
This industry advisory meeting will be an important first step in creating the IVC/ATEP Optics and Photonics Advisory Committee. The committee needs to be a functional group giving advice and support to programs addressing the training for Photonics Technicians in the context of local, regional, and national industry requirements.
The kick off meeting was March 15th, at 5:30 pm, on the ATEP campus in Tustin, CA. - For more information please contact Pam Prince
pprince@atep.us , 949 282-2718.
Respectfully submitted for your consideration,
