Bob Cartland is a Senior Physics Engineer with Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems. He is a member of the Optics Department and the Technical Manager of the Spectrophotometry and Scatter Lab. He earned a BA in Physics from Oberlin College and an MS in Electro-physics from the University of Southern California with an emphasis on photonics. He has published several papers in the design, fabrication and testing of semiconductor photonic devices. His current interests include the development of scatter and spectrophotometric measurement techniques used for testing optical materials, components and devices. He is a member of the IEEE, the Optical Society of America and has been a member of the OSSC since 1996. While a graduate student at USC, Bob was President of the Student Chapter of the OSA and worked with the OSSC on joint programming events. In February 2005, Bob accepted appointment as OSSC Membership Chair and worked to bring the membership records up-to-date. He has since served as a Councilor, Secretary and Treasurer. As a member of the OSSC Board of Directors, Bob's focus is on improving the value of OSSC corporate and individual membership and the recruitment of younger professionals with an interest in optics. Bob says: "Attracting young professionals is critical if the OSSC is to celebrate its centennial in 2051."
